At Winyates, our design and technology curriculum is passionately crafted to transform lives and achieve excellence, resonating with our vision of living life in all its fullness. We are dedicated to creating learning experiences that empower every child to thrive, fostering a vibrant community where education is a continual journey of wholehearted growth and discovery. Rooted in the National Curriculum and enriched by our thought-provoking termly Questions, our curriculum invites children from EYFS through Key Stage 2 to deeply engage with the creative processes of design and technology. By the end of their educational journey, children will not only understand the intricacies of design methodology but will also possess essential skills in planning, designing, manufacturing, and critically evaluating their projects.

Design and technology is taught through a dynamic blend of inquiry-based learning, research projects, and hands-on activities, incorporating advanced technologies like CAD design to elevate student engagement and skill development. Our curriculum evolves from foundational themes such as textiles and junk modelling in EYFS (and nursery where applicable) to more intricate mechanisms and structures in later years. This progression culminates in advanced projects like bridge construction and costume design in upper KS2. Assessment is a cornerstone of our approach, utilising summative assessments, post-quizzes and practical evaluations to ensure consistent student progress. We also offer a wealth of enrichment opportunities, including field trips, STEM clubs, and collaborations with local businesses, all designed to reinforce the relevance and excitement of design and technology within our federation of schools, firmly anchoring learning in real-world contexts.

The impact of our design and technology curriculum reaches far beyond the classroom. Through hands-on projects and collaborative activities, children cultivate creativity, problem-solving skills and critical thinking abilities that are essential for navigating future challenges. They acquire invaluable life skills such as teamwork, resilience and resourcefulness, laying a robust foundation for a lifelong passion for learning in STEM fields.

Our unwavering commitment to developing the whole person, with relationships at the heart of our community, ensures that children excel academically while growing into thoughtful, innovative individuals ready to make meaningful contributions in an ever-changing world. We measure success through academic performance, student engagement in competitions and feedback from children and parents, alongside a growing interest in design and technology that permeates our schools.

Through this structured and enriching approach, we aim to equip our children not only with knowledge and skills but also with the confidence to excel in their secondary studies and positively impact the wider world beyond our federation.
