The Story of Us
Winyates Primary School opened its doors in September 1980, created to serve the growing community of Orton Goldhay in Peterborough. Built with an open-plan design typical of the time, the school was established to accommodate around 360 children and quickly became an anchor point for families moving into the newly developed township.
Over twelve years ago, Winyates joined with St John’s Church School, marking the start of a new era of collaboration, shared leadership and collective ambition. This partnership later expanded to include Barnack Primary School (2020) and Paston Ridings Primary School (2023), forming what is now known as the Spirit Federation. The federation’s name captures the shared ethos of resilience, aspiration and unity that underpins its work.
As part of Spirit, Winyates benefited from strong strategic leadership, an ambitious curriculum vision and a deeply embedded culture of coaching, professional learning and community partnerships. These developments significantly strengthened outcomes for pupils. Over time, Winyates has become known for its nurturing environment, inclusive values and high standards across the school.
The school’s journey reached a landmark moment in June 2025, when Ofsted judged Winyates Primary School Outstanding in all areas: Quality of Education, Behaviour and Attitudes, Personal Development, Early Years, and Leadership and Management. Inspectors described the school as “joyful and exceptionally welcoming,” praising the outstanding curriculum, the impressive personal development offer and the exceptional progress pupils make.
