Firstly, although you’ll have been made aware last term that I am your child’s teacher this year, Mrs Proud, and that Mrs Canon will be working with the children in this class again, we are also delighted to have Miss Potrykus join the team. She has recently returned to live in the area and is looking forward to working in Year 2. If you have any questions in the mornings or at the end of the day, please feel free to speak to any of the team. If I am not available and you wish to speak to me, please let either Mrs Canon or Miss Potrykus know and I will endeavour to call you as soon as possible.
I would like to also take this opportunity to let you know of a few new events happening in Year 2 and a few reminders that should help you.
This year PE is on Wednesday afternoon and Friday morning. Children should come to school in school uniform and get changed at school. They need to have a white PE top, blue or black shorts and plimsolls or trainers. They will also need to have a warm top or hoodie for winter and ideally tracksuit bottoms too. These need to be brought into school in a PE bag which should also be labelled.
Could you supply your child with a water bottle with their name on it please so they can get a drink when they are thirsty: this also enables them to have a drink when needed whilst doing outdoor activities as well as in the classroom.
Please write your child’s name on their clothing-particularly cardigans, sweatshirts and jumpers; so we can return lost property to their owner. This can simply be written onto the label of your child’s clothes and helps us enormously when helping them find lost items!
There will be two trays in the classroom for children to put their reading folders which should include a reading log with their reading book. One will say I read with my child last night and the other will say I did not read with my child last night. Please put your child’s book bag in the correct tray so we can see who is being heard read at home regularly. We will be focussing on reading this year. To enable them to become confident and fluent readers, please listen to your child read on a regular basis and record it in their reading record book.
As well as listening to the children read, please don’t forget to ask them questions about the book to check their understanding, and ask them to refer back to the book to prove it. If children are able to read a book in a day, it is a good idea to read the book several times. Remember to ask them to point to the words as they read because children often remember the text and can say it without reading.
We are delighted to have Forest school sessions. These sessions are lead by experienced qualified Forest school leads and will be held outdoors (in all weathers) every Monday morning so appropriate clothing is needed. We advise warm socks, wellies (if you have a spare pair you can leave them at school), warm coat, hat, and gloves for the colder months. These are fun sessions full of enrichment so please ask your child about these sessions.
